University of Central Florida CREOL Expansion

BASE Consultants provided the structural design for a three-story cast-in-place concrete expansion to the existing University of Central Florida CREOL building, which houses the College of Optics and Photonics. The addition’s first floor includes auditorium and mechanical space, and the upper floors have laboratories and office space. The new structure includes long span concrete beams designed for vibration considerations for laboratories and extensive MEP systems. The addition required a complex foundation system utilizing cantilevered grade beams due to proximity to the existing building foundations. A vertical expansion of the existing stair tower required challenging load redistribution. The existing building remained open during construction and maintaining building egress dictated many structural decisions.
